This year the Appledore Visual Arts Festival (May 31st –June 3rd ) will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary . Our 2007 Festival is returning to its roots and will focus on artists who live and work in Devon including Marcus Vergette and Susan Derges. The Festival was the first annual visual arts festival of its kind and today stands as the broadest ranging event of its type in the UK, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to both view exhibitions and to interact with the artists themselves in a range of workshops, talks and art-creation events.

Themed around ‘Wide River’, the Festival will offer a varied programme of events to celebrate the confluence of the Torridge and Taw rivers which have shaped Appledore’s unique natural and historical environment for centuries. Workshops, talks and demonstrations will cater for all ages and interests. Adults can join drawing classes, children can sign-up for or drop-in to a variety of workshops ranging from film animation to carnival art, while whole families can help create a giant clay fantastical fish on Appledore Quay !

Participating artists include internationally renowned sculptor Marcus Vergette whose national project ‘Time and Tide’ will be on exhibit. Marcus lives and works in Devon, he has designed a unique bell form which he intends to install in 12 tidal locations around the UK coastline, the first of these bells will be on exhibit during the Festival. Susan Derges a well known Devon based photographic artist, will create a 21 foot long photogram image of our estuary waters. Exhibitions will also include a Square Picture Show from North Devon Artists as well as students work from various South West based art colleges.

We will also be screening Film Shorts, this year categories include films from young people, films about local people or on local subject matter as well as a wide ranging open category. Our programme of films promises to be an exciting part of the Festival.

We will be holding our now famous ‘Doorknocker’ competition for Appledore residents. As part of our ‘Wide River’ theme we are inviting everyone to take part in our ‘Paint the View Competition’. Paintings or drawings must be created along the Quay during the Festival, you will need to provide your own materials. There will be prizes for all competitions, so please join in and create an amazing doorknocker or a beautiful image of Appledore’s estuary views.

To celebrate our 10th Anniversary we will hold a series of early evening events on Saturday June 2nd. This will include, the Samba Band Energia accompanied by African dancers will play on the Quay and the Appledore beacon will be lit to celebrate our 10th birthday.
