Kate Paxman

Bucks Mills Artist in Residence May 2010

Back

Kate Paxman has been selected as the Artist in Residence at the unique and iconic Bucks Mills Cabin now owned by the National Trust. Kate is “delighted to have been offered this opportunity, and feels especially privileged as this will be the first artist’s residency to take place at Bucks Mills Cabin.”

Judith Ackland and Mary Stella Edwards painted many watercolours of the Cabin, Bucks Mills village and the surrounding coastal landscape, and these remain as testament to their use and enjoyment of their studio. Kate says that “during my time at the Cabin I will be consciously exploring the influence that the studio and its magical location have on creativity – both in the work of Ackland and Edwards and in my own responses to the place and its legacy.”

Biography

Kate graduated from Central St Martins College of Art in 1996 and came to live in Devon in 2004. She has a contemporary, research-led art practise making site-specific installations and interventions. She has also worked on socially-engaged, community based participatory projects with people from many different cultures and backgrounds.

Working principally with digital media, Kate creates films, soundworks and photographic images. She most recently collaborated with members of the Somerset Chinese Association to celebrate the heritage of Chinese families living in Taunton. Kate produced eight 1.5m x 4m lengths of silk, digitally printed with dye-based inks, plus accompanying texts, which were hung at Hestercombe Gardens and the Brewhouse Art Centre, Taunton.
